How can I tell if my tank is leaking?
Home heating oil tanks can be either above ground or buried underground. Both types of tanks can rust and leak over time posing a number of environmental risks.
If you have an above ground storage tank (AST), signs that your tank may be leaking include:
- Unexpected increase in fuel oil consumption that doesn't appear to be linked to additional use of your heating system.
- If tank is located in the basement - staining on the basement floor or wall near the tank location. If tank is located outdoors - staining on the soil or nearby structure.
- Presence of fuel oil or sheen in the basement sump.
- Consistent problems with your oil burner.
- Fuel oil odor
If you have an underground storage tank (UST), signs that your tank may be leaking include:
- Unexpected increase in fuel oil consumption that doesn't appear to be linked to additional use of your heating system.
- Fuel oil odor
- Oil staining on nearby structures or oil in sump.
- Water in tank and/or furnace malfunctions
